About Tripura
Commission for Women
The Tripura Commission for Women was
set up as a statutory body in February 1994 under the
Tripura Commission for Women Act, 1993 (Tripura Act No. 1
of 1994) to:
• Review the existing provisions of the Constitutional and
legal safeguards for women;
• Suggest remedial legislative measures;
• Facilitate redressal of grievances; and
• Suggest the Government on all policy matters affecting
women.
In keeping with its objectives, the Tripura Commission for
Women is committed to represent the rights of women in
Tripura and to provide a voice for their issues and
concerns. From very inception the Commission has been
dealing with complaints registered with it by the
oppressed women of Tripura and acting suo- moto in many
cases to get them justice. The Tripura Commission has been
visiting almost all parts including remote areas of the
state to make women aware about their rights. It has
organized Legal Awareness Camps, Parivarik Mahila Lok
Adalat to provide speedy justice and Public Hearings on
Women in Handicrafts and Trafficking in Women under the
sponsorship of the National Commission for Women. It
organizes workshops and seminars on important issues
relating to women. Committees on legal matters relating to
safeguards of women, for inspection of Hospitals and
Nursing Homes and for conducting research works on women’s
issues have been constituted. The Commission maintains its
networking with the National Commission for Women and
Commissions of other States and NGOs. The Commission also
interacts with the media, social activists and academics
on the issue of violence against women and seeks their
suggestion to combat it. Facts finding comprehensive
studies, paying special attention to the needs and
problems of women in both rural and urban areas have also
been undertaken. The Commission regularly brings out a
quarterly newsletter, ‘Jago Nari’ in Bengali.
