About Tripura
Commission for Women
We also express our sincere gratitude to Smt. Bijita Nath, the newly inducted Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Govt. of Tripura, for her enchanting attitude of help and cooperation towards the Commission, which inspired us to go forward.
No word is sufficient enough to express our gratitude to Dr. Malini Bhattacharya, Member of the National Commission for Women, for taking time off from her busy schedule to grace programmes conducted by the Tripura Commission for Women at different times.
We are grateful to Professor Dr. Jashodhara Bagchi, Chairperson, West Bengal Commission for Women, for taking all the troubles of coming here to grace the workshop conducted by the Commission on Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and enlighten us with her insights into the problem of violence facing by the women within the family everywhere.
We are very especially grateful for the generosity with which Dr. R. Sarwal, the Commissioner cum Secretary, Social Welfare and Social Education, Govt. of Tripura, offered his unstinted help and cooperation to fulfill the needs of the Commission to carry out its objectives.
Various individuals and officials of different Government Departments were kind enough to extend their help and support to the Commission. It is impossible to acknowledge our gratitude to them individually.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the scholars and NGOs who came forward to conduct studies on various issues relating to women in Tripura at the request of the Commission.
The Counsellors of the Commission deserve our thanks for their dedicated service to the cause of the aggrieved women, who were filing complaints with the Commission in need of counselling to find way of reducing their problems.
It would be inappropriate to single out individuals, but it would also not be proper if a mention is not made of the Officers and members of Staff of the Commission for extending their help and cooperation to enable me to prepare the Report. The ungrudging help and cooperation in a variety of ways they extended in organizing the programmes and in accomplishing the tasks of the Commission cannot be mentioned separately. On behalf of the commission I would like to record my special thanks to all of them.
Our special words of thanks to Colours who printed the Report and particularly to Shri Bhashkar Bhattacharyya for extending his innovative ideas in designing the same.
Last but not the least, the most significant achievement of the present Commission is the sense of collective responsibility that has been generated by all the Members of the Commission. This has acted as a galvanizing force. The Members have always been a remarkably pro-active force in accomplishing the tasks mandated by the Act.
The Report is submitted to the State Government with the hope that it will act as an aid in locating and understanding the issue of violence against women which does not match with the overall situation of the law and order prevails in our State. We know that conceptualization of the problems may not change the course of rendering justice overnight but it will certainly offer in ample measure the leads and hints for a better delivery of justice for restoring women’s rights, implementation of laws enacted to provide protection to women, mitigating hardships and providing relief to women victims. We believe that the issue of violence against women is going to affect everybody, be man or woman, be a victim of violence or not.
The Report, along with recommendations, is submitted to the State Government with the hope that it will contribute its mite in understanding the strains, sufferings and difficulties of women in our State who lack the voice and ability to face the situation and help policy planners, the police administrations in planning appropriate interventions and programmes for protecting the rights and interest of women in the State, although we know that the Report of the Tripura Commission for Women is not a binding on anyone. However, like everywhere, women of Tripura have a long way to go. The Commission’s endeavour will be to stand beside the women waging struggle for their due space in the human society comprising both men and women.
